I was tinkering with the dwell on my gun the other day and decided to set it back to stock at 18ms. While doing this a friend mentioned that some of the older pms defaulted to 5 ms dwell and thus the dwell was the number of blinks plus 5 equaled your true dwell. I see in my proto manual that it says the range of adjustment is 1-40 so I am assuming that 18 blinks will equal 18ms?

I am asking because this morning when I was chronoing my gun it would shoot but it would feel like the bolt would stay forward too long and would make a slight blowing sound. It almost felt like the dwell was just really too high. That is what made me really wonder about the 5 + blinks thing. I just resealed and relubed my gun with slickoleum. I had my dwell at 18 blinks LPR at 5 turns out and inline set to about 280 fps. Before I go ripping into again I would just like to know if I am just setting the dwell incorrectly, if it just needs a new battery, or if it sounds like a seal - lube issue? Like I said it really doesn't feel like its sticking just stalling.

Thanks,
Jason

set dwell to 18 clicks and lower lpr. I'm pretty sure when the manual says 5 complete turns its 5 180 degree turns which is 2.5-3.5 complete turns. Try just adjusting your lpr until the marker cycles and then just raise it a little more. Do this without paint first then after it cycles correctly rip away.

18blinks is 18 MS. That is the default setting. If you look through the manual, it has instructions on how to achieve the best dwell, starting at 15ms and increasing till it fires, then testing with paint over a chrono, still increasing till the speed stops increasing.
Unfortunately, in a perfect world this would work. This is not a perfect world.
Set everything to factory settings, which it sounds like you have done. If it sounds breathy, lower the dwell to 17 and test. lower again if it still doesn't feel right. don't go lower than 14ms, and preferably stay above 16.
Once you feel that the shots are good, then lower your LPR in 1/4 turns in till you see your FPS really dip, then come back 1/2 a turn. At this point, you should be good.
